Carbon emissions for the latest Sensation event (the White Party) held at Etihad Stadium on new year’s eve 09/10 were substantially reduced when compared to the previous year. The Sensation team worked with environmental and carbon mitigation partner, Treecreds®, to assess and reduce their impact through the reduction of travel, freight and accommodation generated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Once again, Sensation chose to invest in Treecreds® recommended avoided deforestation project 'Minding the Carbon Store', an initiative that has saved 12,000 hectares of native vegetation from being cleared and burnt. The investment in 278 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions has meant that over 50% of the events calculated emissons were offset.
Treecreds® were first commissioned by Sensation in 2008 to assess the impact of the first new year's event held in Australia and provide avoided deforestation carbon offsets to partially offset that event. Treecreds® continue to work with Sensation in their quest to reduce their carbon footprint through the development of reduction strategies, water and waste management recommendations and the sale of carbon offsets. An inititaive that has been repeated over the last two years is the inclusion of avoided deforestation carbon offsets with each item of merchandise sold on the night. This year this resulted in the purchase of an additional 100 tonnes of carbon.
