Treecreds works with a number of businesses to assist them through the measurement, management, reduction and offset stages of their sustainability assessments.
It has been shown that businesses that are committed to repeating the assessment procedure, annually for example, are most successful in decreasing their environmental impact and achieving environmental goals.
Here is a glimpse of some projects Treecreds have taken on:
RACV have engaged Treecreds to conduct an onsite energy and water audit of the RACV Energy Breakthrough Event held in Maryborough in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Using the results obtained from the on-site assessment carried out during the event, the event’s carbon footprint was determined and carbon emissions offset using Treecreds avoided deforestation carbon offsets.
The comprehensive reports prepared by Treecreds address all water and energy consumption issues, including a detailed audit of each item of equipment used at the event such as lighting and appliances and took into account other environmental factors such as transport by participants and organisers to and from the event.
The detailed reports include a series of recommendations for reducing energy and water consumption for the following year. The reports also identify the estimated cost of implementing environmental measures and the estimated carbon & energy savings.
Treecreds recently completed a report for the Energy Breakthrough 2010.
In 2010, Treecreds commenced working with Myer Music Bowl to assist them in setting sustainability goals, undertake environmental assessments, market environmental intiatives and work towards offering offset packages to their clients.
As a starting point, Treecreds attended the Powderfinger concert in October 2010, where a sample of punters were surveyed in order to determine how they travelled to the event. This data was incorporated into the calculation of the wider event footprint, giving the organisers a good idea of of the distribution of event emissions.
As a follow up, in February 2011 Treecreds attended a Melbourne Symphony Orchestra event where a similar assessment was conducted with an additional detailed energy assessment of the venue also taking place.
The Bowl is currently working with Treecreds to implement a number of reduction strategies that were highlighted through the energy assessment, as well as considering how best to include a range of offset packages as part of their core services.
Both the Shine On and Rainbow Serpent Festivals have incorporated the Treecreds car pass program as part of the entry process. For two years running, Treecreds personnel have been positioned at the gate of these two festivals welcoming guests and offering them a " carbon offset carpass". The pass is intended to offset punters transport emissions travelling to and from the festival.
This intiative has assisted the festivals to lower their overall carbon footprint.
Boogie is a small music festival held each Easter about an hour from Melbourne that works towards maximum sustainability (www.boogie.net.au). Treecreds have been engaged by Boogie to conduct an onsite energy and waste audit of the event for the past three years. The assessment results enable Boogie’s carbon footprint to be determined, reduced and then entirely offset. Treecreds also assessed and made recommendations for reduction of waste, water and emissions at future events.
In addition, a number of innovative sustainability recommendations were made and adopted by Boogie. These have included a “carbon offset car-pass” meaning the last two events have actually been carbon positive. Conversely punters who attended the event were given a free return train ticket to further reduce Boogie’s carbon footprint. Other initiatives recommended by Treecreds and put in place have included a ban on disposable containers and bottled water, full recycling of all organics onsite using a permanent vericulture (worm farm) system.
Treecreds have recently commenced working with Eventix - providers of online ticketing solutions. Eventix will now offer their wide client base the opportunity to sell tickets with an optional offset component.
Eventix have also made a preliminary commitment to look at their own carbon footprint and to work with Treecreds in arriving at real reduction strategies.
Sensation (http://www.sensation.com/) is an indoor dance and music festival that commenced in Amsterdam in 2000. In 2008, Sensation New Years Eve was finally held in Melbourne, Australia. Treecreds were commissioned to conduct a sustainability assessment of the New Years Eve Event in order to determine its environmental impact and carbon footprint and establish a baseline for the environmental management of the event and other Sensation events worldwide.
The sustainability assessment included a comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions footprint, an analysis of the waste management system and waste generated, an audit of the event’s water consumption as well as carbon offsetting recommendations.
The assessment presented Sensation with a number of immediate reduction opportunities and will enable future initiatives, such as New Years Eve 2009, to be measured against this baseline, meaning:
· greenhouse gas emissions can to be tracked and carbon footprint improved
· achieve faster low cost emission-reductions
· reduction of water and waste expenditure
· better understanding of waste generated during event and improvement of waste management plan
· promotion of the event as environmentally responsible
The results of the sustainability assessment meant that Sensation could determine the percentage of the event’s emissions they could afford to offset through Treecreds avoided deforestation projects. In addition, Treecreds worked with Sensation to market and promote their environmental initiative, as well as achieve a creative presence at the event.
