Treecreds works with a number of businesses to assist them through the measurement, management, reduction and offset stages of their sustainability assessments.
It has been shown that businesses that are committed to repeating the assessment procedure, annually for example, are most successful in decreasing their environmental impact and achieving environmental goals.
Following are three examples of projects Treecreds has worked on:
Sensation (http://www.sensation.com/) is an indoor dance and music festival that commenced in Amsterdam in 2000. In 2008, Sensation New Years Eve was finally held in Melbourne, Australia. Treecreds were commissioned to conduct a sustainability assessment of the New Years Eve Event in order to determine its environmental impact and carbon footprint and establish a baseline for the environmental management of the event and other Sensation events worldwide.
The sustainability assessment included a comprehensive greenhouse gas emissions footprint, an analysis of the waste management system and waste generated, an audit of the event’s water consumption as well as carbon offsetting recommendations.
The assessment presented Sensation with a number of immediate reduction opportunities and will enable future initiatives, such as New Years Eve 2009, to be measured against this baseline, meaning:
The results of the sustainability assessment meant that Sensation could determine the percentage of the event’s emissions they could afford to offset through Treecreds avoided deforestation projects.
In addition, Treecreds worked with Sensation to market and promote their environmental initiative, as well as achieve a creative presence at the event.
RACV engaged Treecreds to conduct an onsite energy and water audit of the RACV Energy Breakthrough Event held in Maryborough in 2008. Using the results obtained from the on-site assessment carried out during the event, the event’s carbon footprint was determined and carbon emissions offset using Treecreds avoided deforestation carbon offsets.
The comprehensive report prepared by Treecreds addressed all water and energy consumption issues, it included a detailed audit of each item of equipment used at the event including lighting and appliances and took into account other environmental factors such as transport by participants and organisers to and from the event.
The detailed report prepared in 2008 included a series of recommendations for reducing the event’s energy and water consumption for the following year. The report also identified the estimated cost of implementing identified measures and the estimated carbon & energy savings.
Treecreds were also engaged in 2008 to conduct an emissions reduction project feasibility study for RACV.
Boogie is a small music festival held each Easter about an hour from Melbourne that works towards maximum sustainability (www.boogie.net.au). Treecreds were engaged by Boogie to conduct an onsite energy and waste audit of the event. The assessment results enabled Boogie’s carbon footprint to be determined, reduced and then entirely offset. Treecreds also assessed and made recommendations for reduction of waste, water and emissions at future events.
In addition, a number of innovative sustainability recommendations were made and adopted by Boogie. These included a “carbon offset car-pass” this meant the event was actually carbon positive or alternatively served as a disincentive to drive to the event. Conversely punters who attended the event were given a free return train ticket to further reduce Boogie’s carbon footprint. Other initiatives recommended by Treecreds and put in place included a ban on disposable containers and bottled water, full recycling of all organics onsite using a permanent vericulture (worm farm) system.
